I know it's PCS season and this is all too common but it's still irritating to see. Makes me sad for the pets :-(
I want to adopt them all! My husband said no though. LOL
Why does this need to be a constant conversation on here...hasn't it been talked to death? Sorry if it irrates you but it is something that the pet owner sometimes has to do. At least they are looking for a good home for their pet and not just taking it out and dumping it on the side of the road
It should remain a constant thread on here as long as people continue to be careless and selfish pet owners. I am not even going to sugar coat their actions by calling what they are doing as "rehoming." What they are doing is abandoning their animal and worst they are probably giving the animal to another military family that will do the same in a few years time.
Actually Frank, you're right. I know I just heard of a family that is going to get a dog "only for the time they are here" and also another family selling a pet because they heard it's expensive to ship. They didn't even have an assignment yet!

So they make a site for people to talk about whatever they want and people STILL moan about it. Geez. If you don't like what's being posted, don't read. It's quite simple.
Maybe if people stopped getting animals just because it sounded like a good idea at the time, or just to entertain them whilst they are overseas (ETC ETC) then maybe people wouldn't feel the need to talk about it.
Blame the people who get the animals and then rehome them, not the people who thinks it's sad it KEEPS happening, time and time again.
I was just in the new-comers briefing last Thursday and the pet lady was in there talking about having animals. Apparently some guy at Lakenheath a year or so ago, instead of giving his dog to someone else, slit its throat and then threw it away in the trash. He spent some time in prison and it made national news.
People are WARNED in that briefing (if you ever got you license) about having a pet over here.
It does need to be said over and over again incase we have new comers on this site who are thinking about getting a pet. Its expensive, you have to REALLY care for them even if you have another child, deployment ect. And save up money before you PCS becasue it can get REALLY expensive to ship them back with you!
But like I said, they go over all of this in the briefings before you get your license. And speaking of the briefings, I really like the british cop who was in there. Quite a funny guy!
You know it makes you wonder......how many people would "re-home" their children if they could.......
"3 year old female human for sale! Have to re home due to unfortunate circumstances....turns out she likes to cry and yell a lot and that doesn't really go with mine and my husband's lifestyle...We also don't have as much time for her as she needs. She comes with all her toys and bedding. 250 pounds or best offer."
There is a big difference between pets and kids...can't even compare the to. I was just stating that this topic keeps getting posted and every one gets on and talks about how great their pets are, how people need to be responable and so forth and I agree but my god does this need to keep getting posted every two weeks???? Is it making a difference??? I have said before I love my pets and I move with my pets BUT I understand that not every can and will and they don't need a bunch of people making them feel bad or horrible because they make a decision that I am sure was hard enough. So go ahead and bad-mouth me and such I could care less but if you want opinions then I just gave mine.
And no pets are not like children!! Frank if you are allergic to children don't have any that is why their is birth control. It isn't a choice for everyone just like PETS
LMAO okay Kris, chill out first of all no one is bad mouthing you. Second, I'm pretty confident that Frank is joking about being allergic to kids. Third, no one was comparing raising kids to having pets. I was just saying that some people are so willing to give up pets for silly reasons that if it were legal people would probably sell their kids.
The people who don't have a good reason do need to be made to feel bad or horrible.
So what if it comes up every two weeks, so what if it isn't making a difference. People like talking about the subject. People feel strongly towards it. If you don't like reading about it. Don't.
Wow, Kris - wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? It's not like people have this subject marked on a calender and say "hey, it's been a week, I need to make another post"...
This has been a hot topic of conversation for a while. Veruca noticed something, made a comment. Big deal... If talking about this stops 1 person from taking on a pet for the wrong reasons, then I think it should be posted every day.
Don't like it? There's the back button...
And I HIGHLY disagree with your statement that pets are not like children.
Before we had to put them down, I've had 2 Siberian Huskies that traveled ALL OVER with us, including Japan. They are just like kids. You feed them, you clean their poop, you love them.
Just like my boys... Except my dogs never talked back to me...
I don't know, I think I am fairly allergic to children. When around children I get headaches and I want to scratch my eyes out. That is why I married someone that shares the same allergy as I do. Children, like pets, just don't happen and that is why my spouse and I use prophylactics to ensure that we do not procreate. Too bad there isn't something that can keep careless and selfish people from getting pets...
I personally think that it has a reverse effect. Instead of them trying to find a new home, they don't want to have to deal with the back lash, and just dump the poor animal.
Yesterday I found a 1 year kitty crying in the snow on Feltwell. It was not micro-chipped (we took her to the vet to see if she had owners), not spayed, and had been out all night in the snow. We put up signs and ads all over. We believe that someone just let her go cause they were PCSing, Or she could have simply gotten out. She is litter trained and is very loving.
We have taken her in, and plan on keeping her if no owner is found for this adorable kitty. We have already started "Taking Dora home to the states" fund! We will be here for awhile so by the time we PCS, we will have all that money saved up to take her back.
And yes, my daughter named her Dora lol.
That is just my take on it. I understand its a strong subject, and everyone will always have different views. I'm not saying its right or wrong.
Mrs. Amy, I commend you on starting a fund to take the cat with you to the states! I think a lot more people should do that. It can be rather expensive and it's good to be prepared.
Sorry to upset you all...go ahead complain about how your all perfect pet owners and how horrible people who rehome their pets are if it makes you feel better or more justified. I am not here to get into arguments or debates with anyone. And no Julie I did not wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning...why did you?
Kris, you say you aren't trying to start arguments but your "tone" conveys you being confrontational. Did we offend you somehow?
We're not claiming we are perfect pet owners we are just stating that we do not agree with re homing for silly reasons. I gave two examples of silly reasons in one of my above posts.
No one is personally attacking YOU! I'm sorry you feel that way, however we are all just saying that some people have really dumb reasons for re homing animals.
There are reasons why you should rehome your animals. If it gets to be too much to handle then yes, I agree, rehome. However, its that very reason that people need to think about before they get a pet. What can they handle? Can they handle a pet if they have another baby? If the spouse gets deployed? They need to know that people out there DO care and will notice.
As far as more pets coming up around a cycle that almost always matches with a big PCS time, is it honestly a coincidence that everyone rehoming their pets is doing it for a good reason or just because they are moving and don't want to pay for their pets back to the states? Some may have good reasons but sometimes its not just a coinicidence.
As far as pets being like kids, it all depends on the person. Anna is like one of our kids as far as we are concerned. Not everyone thinks like that though and thats ok. But I think we all agree that they are living things that deserve to not be moved from home to home to home and thats a good thing!
The only way things get changed is by talking about it. There is always new people coming and looking for pets so what if they should look on the underground and see this post? If it saves one animal from someday being rehomed due to "PCSing" or whatever, then it should be ok to talk about.
OMG...Now there is even someone on LYS asking about rehoming unwanted fish when you PCS. This has to stop! Don't get these pets if you aren't prepared for the long haul. How hard could it be to just take them with you? Get a Ziploc with some water. Gosh people :)
Some fish are exotic and need a certain acidic balance, temp ect. I can be a bit more understanding with fish as those are not so takeable. And I don't think they allow a ziploc bag with water and fish on a plane.
But then again, I know we can't take them with so I just don't have fish but when we retire we might...if we don't end up travelling more :-)
