SO we are pcsing back to the states and we both have expired state licenses! How do we rent a car or drive around? I got my license in Washington and will be nowhere near there lol Anyone know what to do?

Julie --- 14 years ago -

You renew them asap

I could be mistaken, but I was under the impression you're technically not supposed to drive without a valid us license...

I was under the same impression...
BUT when we lived in Japan I could swear we had six months after we returned from an overseas assignment to renew them. Might want to contact your DMV to make sure.

I think you have X amount of time once you get back to the states to get them re-newed. Can't you re-new online?

http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/renew.html

This is for Washington state - you didn't specify if it was state or DC. On line or my mail - it's as simple as filling out a form, getting your eyes checked, writing a check and poof, you're done.

Julie, you are awesome.

And just cause you've got me thinking (and I have to research rental prices for soemthing else anyway) I researched the major rental car agencies in the States - they will not let you rent with a passport alone. You must have a valid drivers license and a credit card in order to rent a vehicle.

Edit to add - it could be an international drivers license (doesn't have to be a stateside license - just has to be valid)

Julie, you are awesome.

You're awesome-er!

ummm... I dont think you are supposed to drive with the USAFE license without having a valid US license either. Correct me if I am wrong. I renewed my license through the mail. Just had to schedule an eye exam and send in the paper work.

mine just expired in Feb so since we are pcsing right now I guess Ill just deal with it when I get there...Thanks everyone!

My PA License expired when we first PCS'd here. I had renewed it prior to coming over but what the deal was was this:

We got orders to PCS here from Moody AFB. While on leave (after TMO took our crap) we went back to PA for a month to visit. While there we bent the crap out of our licenses until they were almost broke. We had to do that since they weren't technically expired at that point.

So, we took our bent up broken driver's licenses to the DMV with the checks to pay for new one. Well, since they were only broken and not expired they only renewed them for an additional year. It did buy us some time as they would have expired only a couple months after we had left the states.

So, last year we took a hop and went back for a visit. My license was expired already and by the time my wife made it over (we flew separately) hers was too. We both went to the DMV along with a copy of our orders stating when we would be leaving. They were able to renew our licenses till a year AFTER we PCS from here. Pretty cool! I wish they could have done that to begin with!

In AZ your drivers license lasts a LONG time! I got mine at 16 and it doesn't expire until I am 65! I always thought it was crazy, especially if I keep the exact same card....not sure I will look the same ya know..lol!

Depending on the state you might be able to do it in the mail. I had the same issue with my NY licence and had to fly home and get a new one because they do not do dependants by mail. Military members do not have to have a valid drivers licence while stationed oversea if it expires they are ok but dependants do and if your is invalid or expired you could get in serious trouble if caught. If your Washington one is no longer valid then that makes your uk one that goes with your drivers licence invalid so if i were you i would be calling the dmv in your state and seeing what you can do.
I thankfully made it home in time to renew mine because if you dont in most states by 6 months past of the expiration then you have to take your drivers test all over again that would suck.
