Just helping spread the word that Green Box Sushi 3 in Lakenheath is open again after what I consider a pretty cool renovation. The hours are the same (Mon-Sat, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) for now, but the seating is much better and the place has an entirely different feel to it. If you haven't been and like sushi, I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot. It's in Lakenheath Village, on the high street directly across from Filipiniana.

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

This might be a dumb question....but do they serve anything other than Sushi? The reason I ask is our favorite food place back in Georgia was "Aligatou's" and while they served Sushi, they also served a bunch of other things via the Hibachi.

Susan --- 14 years ago -

Why do they shut so early? :(

AFCartoonist --- 14 years ago -

@SSDD: They will soon, but right now they're all sushi.

@Susan: The owners have another sushi restaurant in Cambridge, and they go there every night. I've been told they're training the staff there to run it, and before too long they'll be open in the evenings here.

Wouldnt you like to know --- 14 years ago -

Thanks for the update. Hubby and I almost cried when we saw it closed. Only close place to get what we want.

@SSDD....They do sell Bento boxes that are not sushi. They come with Chicken or Salamon...very good if I may say.

Julie --- 14 years ago -

Yay, yay, YAY!!!!
I love bento!!!!!!!!

AFCartoonist --- 14 years ago -

Sorry - my comment was based on the term "sushi" referring to the rice, not the fish.

My wife doesn't eat the fish but loves Green Box. She usually gets avocado rolls or exotic California rolls.

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

@AFCartoonist - are you getting free sushi out of this? lol!

I noticed they expanded their fish selection too. I love the sushi rolling machine. Gotta get one of those. Just need to trade in a leg or two.

AFCartoonist --- 14 years ago -

@O.o: I've just become good friends with the owners and really want to see them succeed and stick around for a long time. But believe me - my wife and I drop a pretty penny there, LOL.

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Yea, they are good people. I guess I shouldn't be surprised if there's an ad for Green Box subtly inserted in to the background of one of your upcoming cartoons? ;) Thanks AFCartoonist.

AFCartoonist --- 14 years ago -

LOL, I would be surprised by that, but don't be if you recognize the art style for most of their advertising products. ;-)

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

LOL Will have to check it out next time I go there.

AFCartoonist --- 14 years ago -

Right now it's just the call-in sign at the front, but soon it will be the menu and window decorations as well as a few others around the shop.

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Dang, now you got me in the mood for sushi again. :)

Awesome I love them. Thanks for the ifo.

Susan --- 14 years ago -

It looks tiny from the outside (not had a chance to be in it yet), would it fit a baby's pram in there if myself and my husband wanted to go eat?

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

No room for pram's! My husband and I have a travel booster seat we used for our 1yr old. They have 2 bar type areas that seat 4 I think and 4 2 seater tables pushed together.

Mrs. Amy --- 14 years ago -

Yes, its very cramped inside. Not really enough room for a pram/stroller at all.

I (personally) thought the place was ok. After waiting an hour for food (and everyone I went with was already done and was ready to leave.. we ordered at the SAME time) I got my food. I LOVE sushi, but really wasnt thrilled with my eel (MY FAV) and my 2 rolls. I actually had to give my Philly roll away =/ One of my favs. Oh well. Found another place I LOVE so I'm happy =)

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

Where do you go Mrs Amy? Yeah, I'd get take away if you want Green Box. It's decent but very informal as their plating is what they use for take away. I do like thier Miso soup. Yum!

Mrs. Amy --- 14 years ago -

Yo! Sushi in Cambridge. We sat infront of the one putting it on the belt so we asked what everything was. It was very delish!! I like how I can have just two of the shrimp roll and two of the eel roll instead of buy two whole rolls and being stuffed.

I might used Green box as takeaway only, don't think I'll dine in again.

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

Try Yippee Noodle in Cambridge, we were just told it was better than Teri Aki's. Haven't gone there yet though.

Peace --- 14 years ago -

Tried Green Box tonight for the first time and it was decent. I thought 1 pound per person to dine in was a little silly especially for a 2 year old, but whatever. They also should have signs telling you what to do because they seemed annoyed to have to explain it to people. The owners were not very friendly either. The places in Cambridge are just as good and cheaper.

DrmPoet --- 14 years ago -

@ Peace
Unlike the US, where most restaurants charge a “take away” fee, in the UK it is law that any establishment that serves food must charge a “tax” on orders made to “eat in” the establishment/premises. This is separate from the VAT that is charged as well.

In regards to you comment: “have signs telling you what to do”.

What did you not understand? You get a menu, look it over and/or write down what you want to order and then go to the register to place your order. If you decide to eat in, you still have to place your order at the register and then the staff will bring your order once it has been prepared. Did you not take the time to look and see what the other customers where doing?

In regards to the owners attitudes: “were not very friendly either”

Did you try to speak to them at the front, did you speak up and use a little bit of a louder voice? I ask this because, when behind the counter where the food is prepared, it is VERY hard to hear what is being said in the front of the restaurant. Even if the person is only a few feet away, a normal voice often does not work because of everything that is going on while preparing the food.

Also, they have been trying to find help now for a while and have gone through several employees in the past few weeks. This is part because of the person’s attitude (or lack thereof) and part because of the lack in skill/ability to perform the job. This can cause quite a bit of stress on the owners, especially when they are busy and really need the extra hands, and might have caused the reaction you received.

In regarding the price:

The owner’s suppliers are some of the best a sushi restaurant can buy from. The fish and other supplies are that of a very high quality. As it is, the prices are much lower than they should be charging to cover the true cost of the materials used to make the food. They own two other restaurants that are doing well in Cambridge, they did not have to move here to the local area and open a restaurant. However, the owners are big supporters and enjoy providing this service to the local military community. They are here providing this style of food service because they want to be!

I am sorry to hear your experience was not want you were hoping. My husband and I are there at least 3-4 nights a week and have seen all manner of customer come through the door. All I can say is everyone is human, and we can all have a bad day. Before you write the Green Box off, please give them another try and see if maybe it was just an “off” day. My thoughts, everyone deserves a second chance…

Susan --- 14 years ago -

Damn Poet, you must really like your sushi to write that wall of text.

Peace --- 14 years ago -

@DrmPoet
Everyone else has written their experiences and opinions of restaurants on here and I will do the same. I have worked in food service/customer service since I started working at 18 I know how customers are supposed to be treated and talked to..I don't care if they are having an off day or are busy. It's not too hard to respond to a hello. Even on my worst days, I still put on a happy face for customers. We were the only people in there at the time and it was quiet, yes they heard me. Also, I know the UK charges a eat-in fee at a lot of places, but a pound a person is a little steep is all I'm saying especially for a 2 year old that ate from my bowl of rice.
There is no need to be rude as I said we were the first in there so there were no other customers to watch place an order. I watched them snap at 3 people who came in after us because they didn't know how their process works, so they should post a sign if they get annoyed having to explain it..they sure have signs all over telling you to pick your trash up.
Also-I saw the way they treated and talked to the poor girl they had in there and it doesn't surprise me they can't keep help!

I really wish people would stop getting so upset about people's comment on local eateries, we all have opinions and I like to hear them! In a lot of cases you make the restaurant look bad coming on here to defend them.

part of it all --- 14 years ago -

I have been to a few sushi restaurants in the states, but I am FAR from an expert. Each time I dine on sushi, it is a totally new experience. We would like to try Green Box. I have trouble looking at the menu and knowing how much would be a good amount for a meal.
What is your favorite meal/combo of items when you dine at Green Box? Also - for those of you who are sushi literate, is there a specific etiquette that should be used when dining there (or any sushi restaurant)?

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

What kind of sushi should someone like me try? I've never had sushi but....I hate veggies, usually only prefer the plainest of foods (meat, cheese, bread). So....what sushi would be palatable for me? Something plain...I like spicy and I've heard of the "Spicy Tuna Roll". I guess I just don't understand sushi and don't really know what is on it normally. It must be great....everyone raves about it. So, I'd like to try it. I just don't want to go buy some only to find it a horrible food. Can anyone help?

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

What kind of sushi should someone like me try?

Sweetie, that is a difficult question to ask since it is SO dependent on what you can handle. When I met my husband he was against ANY form of fish, cooked and especially not uncooked. But over the years I've had him try different ones.

I have found that Salmon seems to be the gateway drug of the raw fish world. But again, it also depends on where you go and the quality of the fish. Have you ever had just regular california rolls? It's just imitation crab meat but if you've never had sushi before it's a nice way to get an understanding of what it's about. Then try some Salmon. :)

@Peace - DrmPoet did seem kind of offended but I wouldn't take it personally cuz it didn't seem overly rude...just...defensive for some reason. I felt the same way as you when I went, so you're not alone.

@DrmPoet - Chillax, yo!

Julie --- 14 years ago -

And don't discount sushi thinking it's all fish / seafood.
Inari is really good if you like sweet.
