Does anyone try and use as many coupons at the commissary? How much can you actually save trying to use coupons at the commi?

Husker73 --- 14 years ago -

You can actually save quite a lot. You can get coupons at both AFRC's. Church groups, etc. from the States send coupons over all the time. On average I save close to $10, I'm excited if I can beat the surcharge. :) But there have been times when I've saved more than $20.

I've gotten into the couponing world the last 2 months. My goal now is to save at least 50%. I fall anywhere in-between 50% and 70% at the commissary. When I first started all I wanted to do was cover the surcharge... sounds funny now since my new goal is to save at least as much as I spend. So if I spend $50 I want to have saved at least $50. It is overwhelming in the beginning but it gets easier to understand as you go. You just have to learn to get your coupons and sit on them until the sale comes up and use them then. Overseas locations are great because you get to use them up to 6 months after the exp date. There are many websites and blogs that will do all the work for you, you can even go to the DeCa site and get a list of products on sale and their sale price and match your coupons before you go to the store so you will get an idea on what you are spending. If you only acquire sale items and stock up a little on them, slowly your stock pile will grow and you will need to spend less and less when you go shopping. The site I use all the time is we use coupons dot com. Of course there are MANY others, but this is the one I like the most. There are virtual classes on this site to help you learn and if you go to the forms, there is a separate commissary board where people post their matches.

I don't think I ever go the the commissary and not use coupons. It takes a little time and effort, but it is well worth it!
Shannon, do you have a list of sites you can share for couponing? I had a few I used in the states but they do not work at the commissary? Thanks!

OOOO, ladies! You are getting me excited! I've tried reading up on doing somewhat of the extreme couponing at the commissary but I've only read that it's next to impossible at the commissary so I was just settling for anything. Our grocery bills are gonna be crazy this summer with kids who eat like they are teens already. However, I don't want to stock up on 40 bottles of mustard and tick off everyone else as I go.

Thanks, Shannon!

What is the DeCa site that shows everything on sale? The closest thing I've found is the MaxiSavers that show like 4 things on sale, haha. I think I've saved around 20 bucks on an $80, but never anything more. I feel like I need to spend more to save more since I don't need 2 of something to save 1 dollar.

Every little bit helps, for sure. The most I've saved has been $60, but I typically am more in the $20-$30 range (savings off of about a $120 total). I do the same thing Shannon mentioned--buy couponed items when they're on sale. You do sometimes have to spend a little to begin with to get your stock going, but you quickly begin to save. Another good commissary coupon match site is http://thehappyhousewife.com/real-life/commissary-coupon-match-ups-6/. I also print out the sale list off the Lakenheath commissary site. Many times Lakenheath has different or additional sale items from the DeCa site. I think you can get to the DeCa site from militaryshoppers.com.

please give us this website. only thing i could find was commissary website in general and it wanted to run my ssn thru deers to make sure i was able to view their sale items. needless to say i didnt do it b/c i'm so paranoid about identity theft

Yes--I've used that one with the SS number request, too. It apparently is legitimately connected to DOD, though, because I've tested fake social security combinations with my last name before and it wouldn't work. But, I completely understand the hesitancy.
Here's the one that is Lakenheath's sale list (with the percentages saved): http://www.commissaries.com/stores/html/store.cfm?dodaac=HQCE1H&page=savings It is not always updated, but just bookmark it check it periodically. The other sales ad I use is DeCa's.It's basically like an ad insert you'd see in the paper. Not everything featured in this ad is always on sale at RAFL, because overseas commissaries can't offer as much. It's available here: http://www.militaryshoppers.com/onsalethisweek/disclaimer.php
