Who measures out the race courses on base? I did the 5K today and it was nowhere near 3.1 miles. It was 2.79 miles at the finish line on my Garmin running watch, so me and a few other guys kept running until we hit 3.1 miles. I ran a 5K on Lakenheath several months ago as well, and it too was well short of 3.1 miles. That one started at the gym, so I would have thought it would have been measured out better. People who don't have a GPS watch or pay attention to their run times may not notice the difference, but I feel like I'm getting short-changed every time this happens. Anyone else?

Well as a runner, I would feel short changed as well, but it probably has something to do with the method they used to measure. If they drove it, it is possible their odometer was off. If they used Googlemaps, it could have been off due to small changes that have been made around the base. Its not like its a full mile off or something. I run with a watch as well and have many races even in the states be off. But remember, your watch is calibrated to your pace, so maybe it is you that is off....

My watch isn't calibrated to my pace. I could see if it was one of the Nike+ sensors for iPod, but it's not. And I doubt mine is off. There was a lady at that previous race whose GPS watch also showed the same distance I had (something like 2.8 miles). I was next to a guy today during the race whose watch beeped the 1 mile mark at the same time mine did, so the watches are good. I'd say it's your first guess--that they drove it. Seems a bit lame to do it that way. Google maps doesn't cover the base anyway. That .3 miles is equal to about 2 minutes of running time, so it is sort of a big deal.

Somewhat disappointed with this topic, I was hoping for car racing. Watching people run around is a little boring, now a good drag race on the flightline on the other hand ;-)

That would be cool. I've always thought the runway should be used at the weekend for drag races since the airfield is closed at that time.
