We're PCSing in a couple months, and any info about the area and base would be appreciated- like where to look for houses, what's the job market like, etc. I know we'll get a sponsor but in the past that has meant next to nothing.

My wife & I were stationed there for 4 1/2 years. The town Moody is in is called "Valdosta". It is about 30 minutes north of the Florida Border. Jacksonville is a popular destination that is nearby.

The base housing isn't bad. We lived on 1661A Mercury Dr. (the zip code for Moody is 31605).

Valdosta has a nice amusement park called "Wild Adventures". When we first got there Valdosta wasn't anywhere nearly as developed as it was when we left in 2008. I'm sure it's even nicer now. If we could go back we would. The weather is AWESOME! The main road outside of Moody is called "Bemiss" and be careful on it, it can be VERY dangerous.

When we first moved there we lived in "Ray City"...that first year we went through a crazy hurricane season, but we survived. If you are looking for a quick place to rent then look up a man named "Don Porter". He is a landlord and a VERY good one. He primarily owns mobile homes, but they aren't crappy ones. He is a good guy to know in a pinch.

Valdosta offers the Colonial Mall which is nice, and there is a ton of great places to eat. You MUST try "Aligatou's" it is a Japanese Steakhouse and YOU WILL LOVE IT. I swear. Mori's is good too.

What else do you want to know? I can tell you pretty much everything about the area, it was our last base and we LOVED it! Let me know! :)

What kind of work are you interested in? The job aspect is pretty good, it's not a "hole in the wall" like Shaw AFB is. Likewise it isn't in the middle of farmland like here in England is. It is hustling and bustling there in Valdosta.

The base is small, but everything is easy to find and it offers enough to keep you happy IMO. Anything specific?

The BX there is a joke but hey, a Super Walmart is down the road! I do have to say though....the BX there is better than BOTH of the BXs here, it has everything under one roof!

I heard there are some nice young studs that you can mount over there. You will have a field day.

Nice. This reply coming from a person that just joined LU only an hour ago....way to contribute to the OP's question pal.

Pretty much everyhing you said there was correct about Moody. That was my last base also. I liked it because all the good places to see in Florida was not too far away and Atlanta is not too far off either. As far as the BX goes it has just about eveythng you may need but nothing you want...if that makes any sense. Mori's was my favorite resturant. Moody is one of my favorite places...nice base, great weather and a little city with all the amenities of a big city.

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

@ datboy - Exactly! Valdosta is a pretty nice place, some places aren't safe there (there is some serious crime in certain areas) but all in all we loved being stationed there.

OP, keep in mind Orlando isn't that far of a drive at all and SeaWorld has a deal where Military gets in for free! If you enjoy the nightlife Remerton offers those kinds of things. Remerton is weird cause it's like a city within a city. Strange....I know.

I'm missing Sonny's BBQ just thinking about Moody! When we were there we used to eat at "Me Ma's" which was literally across the street from the base. They served some great pulled pork! Fresh baked cakes too! Man, Georgia is a great state. I just checked the weather for 31605 on my iPhone and it's going to be 81 degrees today! Lucky! Tomorrow is supposed to be 85!

I always liked how the winter didn't stay cold for too long and before you knew it you were back in a T-Shirt and shorts!

CiCi's Pizza was a great place to eat, we used to go there when we went to the mall. Lol, honestly that mall was the first mall I've been in that was carpeted. Here is some interesting trivia....Valdosta was the FIRST city in the US to have an ATM machine.

The comedian Bill Hicks was born in Valdosta. Good luck OP! Have fun! Soak up some Sun for us!

Thanks everyone for your advice! I think this will be a much easier PCS than the one coming here. Young studs, you say? Hmmm...LOL.

One thing I'd like to add.....it may not be much of a big deal to some but to me it was HUGE (in Donald Trumps voice). Before we left Moody they got a LITTLE CAESARS PIZZA!!!!!! That was great news for us. We are big Pizza aficionados. At moody you'll have access to:

CiCi's Pizza Buffet....which is great but crowded. My fave was the buffalo chicken pizza! SPICY!

Pizza Hut...there are a few of them.

Little Caesars, my favorite pizza place. Warm Crazy Bread makes my soul happy.

Hungry Howies....we got moldy crust from them once.

Bucks Pizza....wow, they made some AWESOME "bigfoot" style pizzas and the butter garlic dipping sauce was great.

Pizza Quick...it might not be there anymore? When we first PCS'd into Moody there was "Philly Cheesesteak" by the Walmart/Gamestop/Ryan's Buffet/Applebees area but they got bought out and it turned into a Pizza Quick. The pizza was good and even better it was only $5 for a large pie!

Domino's, don't really eat much Domino's Pizza....I don't know why. But there is one by the "Family Dollar", Subway Subs area located on the left if on Bemiss traveling towards Valdosta.

Of course, the BX had Anthony's Pizza which IMO isn't that bad. The crust is great. Too bad they replaced the Anthony's here with Pizza Huts. RRR! They never seem to get a pie right, it's either burnt or raw dough. WTH?!

All this talk about Moody makes me miss it there. Have fun OP! Enjoy those young studs! Lol! Maybe they'll eat some excellent pizza with ya!

Oh, and before I forget. The Taco Bells there are nasty....flies buzzing around everywhere. We actually had a name for them. They were called "Toxic Hell". The only one to eat at is the one beside the Cracker Barrel (which is good BTW). The one on Bemiss by the McD's is new so that would be even better! It was built when we left in 2008.

Fazoli's is good! They have never give you enough breadsticks though! There is also an Outback Steakhouse and a Hooters. OOh! and a Red Lobster, a Chick-fil-A, basically tons of places to eat, variety....something missing here. There are NO Olive Gardens though because Lowndes county is a "Dry County" and Olive Garden would serve Wine on Sunday as they usually would....so Olive Garden isn't allowed in the area. The nearest one is in Jacksonville. I'm so jealous and excited for you! Have fun!

Little Caesars does the $5 take away pizza's too! Yum! Not sure they do it there, but we were amazed when we went back to Ohio and walked in paid 5 bucks and walked right out with a pizza.

Yeah, they do it in my hometown for $5 as well....they call them "Ready Hot" pizzas. I'm not sure if they do it like that in Valdosta.

Bottom Line.. Its in America... Better than here. And alot to do in the area, and a short drive to a "REAL BEACH"...

Oh my hometown!! I miss moody :( OK. you want to live in either Hahira, Nashville, or Adel (my hometown). I dont suggest living in Lakeland unless you just have to. They are about a 20 to 30 min drive from base but well worth being out of the valdosta traffic. Wild Adventures (previously mentioned) is good. New restaurant there you must try called Smoking Pig. There is also a Texas Roadhouse (great atmosphere), Mori's (take your wallet), Red Lobster, Zaxbys (you must try the Zax sauce!! Dip everything in it, even your bread It's so good my husband even put it on his taco bell) Get everything on the menu, it's pretty awesome. Hope yall like high school football it's a HUGE deal in the fall and the local teams are pretty good. There is Reed Bingham State Park in Adel (actually on the Cook and Colquitt County lines.) When you go, pay attention to a restaurant very close to the Cook County entrance called The Catfish House, it's pretty good. In Tallahassee, FL is about an hour to hour 1/2 drive from Valdosta. As for jobs, depends on what you're looking for and what you're qualified for. The economy is hurting everywhere and they didnt leave South GA out of the picture :(. I had my same job for 4 1/2 yrs til we got orders to England. You can email me at ericaweb07@gmail.com and I can answer any questions about the area. I'd be glad to help. I lived there for 24 years and I miss it dearly. Hope you like it.

The Catfish House

Lol, this reminded me of a good family restaurant just outside of Ray City called "Ray's Mill Pond". Hands down the BEST hush puppies and gator tail I've ever had the chance to eat. I LOVE alligator tail....tastes BETTER than chicken. They serve catfish too....so that is what reminded me of it.

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Here is a link to Ray's Millpond....I guess I was spelling it wrong.

SSDD: Oh I forgot all about Rays Millpond! It is good. There used to be another restaurant on some lake in Nashville called Gator Tails. Did you ever eat there? They closed it about a year or so ago but it had great gator tail. The frog legs werent that bad either. I'm not an adventurous eater so that's a big deal if I thought it was good LOL

Nope, can't say I have! Sounds good though! I ate at an awesome place in Tavares/Leesburg Florida called "Dead River Vics" and they had some great Gator Tail nuggets and Grouper sandwiches. Live bands too playing great music. All around awesome place to eat! There are two restaurants I miss the most....Aligatou's and Me Ma's. I loved Me Ma's pulled pork. Pretty nice people too!
