So anyone been assigned to Bolling AFB or the DC area? Is base housing any good? Are there any good family friendly neighborhoods to live outside the DC area?

Wouldnt you like to know --- 14 years ago -

I have never lived there but my parents live south of DC and we go to Bolling all the time. The base is small and nice. Housing looks good since they have just built it up. Good luck!

Holy heck! Sounds like it might be a PITA to live there. This is one of the bases I was considering (well, me AND the wife) as it's only a 6 hour drive to our hometown. It would be nice not having to drive 2000 miles round trip like Georgia was. My best time from GA to PA was 16 hours.

My best friend lives in DC. She lived on Bolling for 4 years. They just bought a house in Waldrf, witch is about a half hour commute. The housing they lived in was tiny and old. The schools in the area that Bolling is in are terrible. The neighborhood outside the base is Ghetto. I mean GHETTO. They moved out to Waldorf so their kids can attend better schools and have a little more freedom. Also to get a bigger house. They had to move that far out to get in a decent neiborhood. They both have family close and her husband loves his job. that is why they haven't moved.

Waldorf is not 30 mins away from Bolling AFB. It's more like an hour or maybe two hours with traffic. I wouldn't live on base housing because every time I pass bolling AFB you can smell the sewage treatment plant from Arlington, VA. Bolling AFB base housing also had satellite housing area in Landover, MD - but I wouldn't live there since I use to hangout in Landover back in my high school days. I would try looking in Brandywine, Cheltenham (not near forestville), Accokeek, and some part of Clinton. Good luck!

Waldorf is 30 mins from ANDREWS with no traffic with traffic on 5 it can be 1-1.5 hours. I grew up near there my Parents live south of Waldorf on the Chessy and my Grandmother lived in Waldorf for 40 years. I remeber Waldorf having maybe 5 lights on 301. The place is expensive. I know people who lived in Dover and COmmuted eveyday. One thing about living in Va is you pay taxes on EVERYTHING!! Even your cars every year.
I had a chance to get orders to Andrews my parents have 2 Mother in Law suites in their house. I wouldn't of seen them I would of had my own 2-car garage use of my dads 25 foot boat OH and $2300 a month in BAH which I would of pocketed and I turned it down. The only thing good about that area north of Waldorf is Wawa. SCREW DAT!!

So much animosity! So if you're assigned to Bolling can you live on Andrews or Anicostia base housing? I know that it's now Joint Base Anicostia-Bolling, but was wondering if they ran the housing like they do for RAFM and RAFL?

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Andrews and Bolling arent next door. They are about 15 miles apart. It will take you 30 mins-2 hours to drive 10 miles in rush hour traffic(0600-0900) (1600-1800) on 95 and thats if there is no accidents.

So what about the Metro? Do I have to worry about getting stabbed if using it or is it even worth it?

Matt --- 14 years ago -

If you are a civilian working they will pay you to use the Metro.
The Metro isnt bad. I have used it at all hours nothing to really worry about

Matt --- 14 years ago -

I meant DOD civilian. They pay you to use the Metro and not drive there. At least for the Pentagon.
Its Not THAT bad there is tons to do.

I wouldn't live in the Anacostia area! not family friendly at all. Find housing in the PG county area. I would even ask if you can live on base housing at andrews afb.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

PG county was the murder capital of the USA couple years back. 95.5 WPGC
St. Marys is WAYYYYYY more family friendly within 40 miles. But man thats a helluva drive everyday. I know tons who do it though. Mu Uncle in law owns a tattoo shop/Carpet cleaner bizness 1 mile from Andrews and he lives about 4 miles from the back gate his cars/work vans get broken into all the time. His 22's on his Escalade got stolen while parked his garage.

And there is always the Hanger Club.. Male strippers on Thursdays

Are you from PG County? I don't think PG county is that bad, I'm from Temple Hills myself. Wat wat!

NandoBiznez --- 14 years ago -

And yeah how did you know Thursdays were male stripper night??

Matt --- 14 years ago -

When DC was called the murder capital o fthe world back in the 90s it was actually PGC.
The male stripper is on the sign off of Rt. 5. I am from Washington County/St. Marys. Like I said my grandparents lived in Waldorf and my wifes family is from around there. So I was down there alot. Im also good freinds with the Ex Head Sherriff of PGC. He works for the Redskins now but lives in Ocean City.

Anyone know about military housing at Glenn Haven? They look like apartments that are military family housing but now privatized located in Wheaton, MD. They look like decent housing, didn't know if anyone had heard of them? Also what about Ft. Belvoir? Housing looks awesome there, but can imagine there is quite a waiting list? Found all this stuff from AHRN.com, but looking for the cold hard facts...

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Wheaton is on the other side of DC near Rockville you could be talking hours to get there driving 7am. If your going "privatized off base housing" you might as well rent a house.

This happened when I was there last year.
You know its bad when 1. Applebees has off duty State Trooper as security 2. He gets killed working there

Yea was looking at homes for rent near Waldorf. Some pretty good deals for renters there. May seem like a dumb question, but I'm assuming utilities are outrageously priced in that area?

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Compared to what? No its not outrageous and there is competition.
