Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost to ship and extra vehicle back to the states when we PCS. Also, if anyone knows where I could find that information, that would be helpful too. They are both US spec vehicles. Thanks in advance for the help!

I dont know when its going to happen but eventually they are going to let you ship 2 vehicles per family.

The other side of that arguement is spending millions of more dollars to pay for a used vehicle with money that the military doesn't have. Or having it cost that much more for families to move to England so that when you get there, you HAVE to buy a car. Or if the military invests in buying cars that just get used and flipped over to the next family/solider that comes...you'll have a whole bunch of people that will mistreat it just like they do family housing. For housing, I'm not saying they all do but for the most part, houses are trashed, utilities are used to the max because it just isn't their house and they really don't care. Uncle Sam pays for it. Same thing would happen with a car if they aren't paying for it.

I have an American spec vehicle. Had a license plate that said USA in Germany. I've seriously never encountered anyone that ever said or did anything to me just because I was American. They changed over the license plates due to all the threats by "terrorists" at the bases we were at but the actual citizens never went out of their way to harm me or my car. That said, I know it happens. But it's not as often to where extreme measures need to be taken.

To the OP, let us know what you find out for your size vehicle. We will be shipping back and little one but if you don't mind posting how much it cost you for your size vehicle, it could give me and others out there an idea. Good luck!

How About... England join the rest of the world and drive on the left...

OR

How about all americans leave this country then we wont have this issue of bring vehicles here, or shipping them back, or storing them while we are here like I had to.

Ill go with option 2 and leave in a heartbeat....

BTW.. Good luck with shipping your car, a friend shipped there car back to Florida for around $1700 I believe it was. Guess it all depends where the final destination is..

76 countries drive on the left. Not just England.

Have your opinion, but leave the insults out HATH. We get it, you don't like the country, that's all you needed to say.

Why would the government have to buy a vehicle for you? Driving overseas is not a right. If you want to drive then buy a car with your own money.

Living overseas isn't a right either. The government pays for that since you've got no choice or be seperated from your spouse for years. That's why I said, if you take away shipping vehicles over here, the families are going to expect the government to pay for that too.

I think it's stupid that they allow you to ship a vehicle here period.

Well then how else are people going to get around? You know how many buses it would take and how long? Everyone would be forced to base (including you I believe) just to be able to take transportation to get to work in the morning. Suckage.

*bust bust bust*

oh god i wish we just had a big ol bus system for mil, so we didn't have to worry about the whole driving dealio.

There are alot of bases where you cant ship cars to. People there seem fine. Now If someone buys a car and the finance will not let them ship it and they are upside down to much then they are screwed

People with families? Are the people made to stay on base? Is it a large base?

Japan...

I think it's stupid that they allow you to ship a vehicle here period. Driving a left handed drive car in a right handed drive location automatically singles you out as an American.

So much for force protection and blending in with the locals.

That's not true Mitch. There a LOTS of Brits here that own LHD vehicles. Let us NOT forget that Spain is to the Brits that Florida is to us Northerners. Spain has LHD vehicles....as does Germany. Also, American vehilces such as the Corvette, Camaro, Firebird, Mustang and some of the trucks/SUVs are very popular machines for them to buy and have imported to England. The owner of Cooper's Garage owns a Ford Expedition. Yes, it is US Spec.....I'm not aware of any foreign version of that truck.

So, in general it doesn't single anyone out as being American, it just solidifies that a stereotype does exist. Lol. My 2 pence.

I'm thinking the big "I love Lakenheath Yardsales.com" across the back window is probably worse :P

Japan...

I have heard that people still drive over there. I assume they must then buy a car when they get there? If that's the case, it really ups the cost of moving especially if you need a larger vehicle.

Ha! Very true!

WitnessProtectionProgram --- 14 years ago -

What do they do with the vehicle when they leave? Are they allowed to sell the vehicle to another military family that gets stationed there?

Why does a place like Japan not allow cars but the UK does? It can't be the side of the road they drive on obviously.

Sorry for the 100 questions, it has me curious.
