Just filed my tax return yesterday. I know myPay said Active Duty Air Force W-2s wouldn't come out till tomorrow, but looks like they came a little early. Finish that E-file this weekend and get the return by the 4th$$$

Turbotax and TaxSlayer both offer free filing for military.

WORD! We did our taxes last night! Done! Turbotax FTW!

**** --- 14 years ago -

Go through MilitaryOneSource and the H&R Block Advantage is free for federal and state taxes. I've used this for years now, very simple and fast.

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

oh god i forgot its tax time...

man do those intimidate me. is there a service on base we can use? where I can just give my stuff to someone and they do it for free? or do u get more back doing it online?

H&R Block is on Lakenheath - not free...
If you're a member of USAA you get a good discount on Turbo Tax - you can do everything online and it's just answering a bunch of questions. It takes the confusion out of filing.

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Didn't there used to be something at the base libraries where folks would volunteer time to help with taxes?

I guess with the accessibility of the internet, that could have easily been phased out. Thanks though, Julie.

Doenload Turbo Tax from a certain site and do them myself.

how do you doenload? or do I want to know?

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

I would have guessed Scottish.

They had that in Japan, I just have not seen it here. I would check with the library - there might be something...

The H&R Block is on-line and it's totally free for both Federal and State Returns (go to MilitaryOneSource.com and follow their prompts). It may charge for some returns or States but I've used it for five years now with NE being our state and have never paid. It is very, very easy.

Husker73 --- 14 years ago -

Most bases have the free service O.o. and Julie are talking about...they had it last year on Lakenheath, and are usually through the Legal Office. The information was in one of the base magazines last year, but I haven't gotten to read on it a while to see about this year.

I like Turbo Tax even though they charge a fee. Since I use them every year I don't have to reenter all our personal information!

I wish I could file mine now, but have to wait til I get all the forms from the banks and schools, stupid interest and extra deductions!

Jenh --- 14 years ago -

Just Google "Turbo Tax Freedom edition" it is free to use and file for mil and low income families, I use it every year. Super simple and fast! Usually get my return in 7 days.

Turbo Tax Freedom edition

This is the version we have been using for the last five years...it's great.

Wow! If hubby doesn't deploy all year we get Nada! We didn't even qualify for the Freedom edition! WTH! I made too much and he didn't deploy...see, maybe I should just quit work...(looks off, visualizing relaxing days full of bubble baths)...back to reality..Nah, I like having time off from the kiddos.

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Oh honey, that's why they have spas and retreats ;)

vincent --- 14 years ago -

Hi didn't read the whole thread but be careful with tax slayer. We were going to use them last year and they said we were only getting back $700. We felt something wasn't right and went to base legal and they did it for us and got us 2,300 back. Just sayin :)

Rachel --- 14 years ago -

The base is offering free tax services starting tomorrow 26 Jan, for all E-1 through E-4 and people deploying, then from 6 Feb on, anyone can make an appointment to have them done. It's held at the legal office, and the hours are M-Th 8-5? adn extended hours on Wed evenings until 7. Do a search on the lakenheath.af.mil site for the offical info. While I normally do my own online, these folks are trained by the IRS and are here to help us, so I'm going to take advantage of it.

O.o (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Thanks for the great info Rachel! Do you know if this is just for Lakenheath though?

Rachel --- 14 years ago -

It didn't say, but it should be for all active duty. Mildenhall should have something similar set up also, maybe try searching the home page?
