I was wondering what peoples different experiences wherewith their AF recruiter. good and bad? My Hubby scored really high on the ASVB and could have done anything he wanted but let the recruiter put him in a general slot because he wasn't sure what he wanted to do. It worked out for the most part.
My son is going to see the recruiter next week. He wants to be a firefighter. I have read you go in with a specific career but it is hard. Any advice?

My son went to see a recruiter that he didn't mesh well with at all. He wanted to go in as a SEER and the guy really kept putting him off like he was discouraging him from joining-- he almost bought it that the AF didn't want him. He had scored really well on the ASVAB in High School, but had let 3 years lapse, so had to start from scratch. He ended up driving four hours to get a new recruiter who snapped him up and arranged for him to do all of his testing in a short time.

Supposedly there is a LOT of people trying to get in and not a lot of jobs though, so my son signed his papers in October and won't go in until March.

Good luck to your son D!

Jeni, did your son get SEER? My son is still 17 so we are hoping to get delayed enlistment as a firefighter.

Yeah, it's actually really hard to get in the USAF right now....pretty much all the branches. My wife is telling me all the time.

When I first thought about joining the Military I was dead set on joining the USMC. I really wanted to be a Marine. My dad told me to just go down to the recruiters and talk to them all. So, I did....except the USN/USCG! Lol, I hate boats and the ocean. The USAF wouldn't take me cause I've got a GED. I stopped into the US Army's office before heading across the hall to the USMC's office. By the time I left the office the recruiter had completely changed my mind, and I started the process of joining the Army. Looking back I wish I would have just went Marine Corps. The Army wasn't bad, it's just not what I really wanted to do.

My wife joined the USAF and her recruiter was trying to talk her into breaking up with me. He kept telling her that she was about to go on a life changing journey and needed to focus on herself and her career. Glad she didn't listen! I never understood why he felt the need to push his opinions on her but he tried! She ended up joining "open general" and got put into "Life Support". She was worried about becoming Security Forces because she really wanted to work on the flight line. Now she works on the flight line and is tired of it. Lol! Too much of one thing is never good! Lol!

My advice, make sure your Son knows what he's getting into. The Army has a place on post that reads contracts and breaks them down into easy to understand terms. Maybe there is something like that here? Aside from that make sure he has a rough idea of what he'd like to do and to get an ASVAB study guide and to take the ASVAB pretest. The higher the score the more jobs he can pick! Good luck!

My son also has his GED. He can join the AF if he gets 15 college credits, which he is currently working on. He also needs to score above 60 on ASVAB.

We are also looking at AF reserve for back up.

I wanted to go USMC so bad as well, raised by a Marine and Fed it was the logical thing, but with a jacked up ankle (2 pins) my Uncle's buddy who was a local recruiter told both us there was a good chance I could really screw my ankle up and should just go USAF that it would be way easier on my ankle. So that is what I did, I don't regret it, I met my hubby and had a great 4 years and now I work for the AF as a civ. There are days that I think about "damn, I would have made a great Marine"...life goes on, my son wants to be a Marine now and I fully support it! The last true Military!
