My 17 year old son is finished with High school and thinking about joining the AF. The recruiter locator shows nobody for UK. I know there has got to be one that works for USAFE.
I also need to know how he would take the ASVAB?
He wants to be a Firefighter. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of this career field?

Unless he has left in the last few weeks, the recruiter is located at Mildenhall- his name is Phillip Guffa and his email is phillip.guffa@mildenhall.af.mil

Dawnmom25 --- 14 years ago -

Thanks, I will send him an email, hope he is still here.

He's on the first floor of the 100th ARW headquarters building, right across the from the G Club and base theater (just in case you're not familiar with it.)

And he's still there. If he's not at the office, he has cards you can fill out and slide under the door and he'll call you back.

Make sure everything in in writing and check your facts, I used to be a recruiter and they will try anything to included lies to convince you to do what they want. Ask about the influencer letter when you talk with him.

We asked him if my son can wait on a delayed enlistment to go into firefighting?
He basically said because of the AF downsizing there is a waiting list. You have to pick 5 jobs and 1 general. When 1 of those comes up you go to basic. I am apprehensive because I know he can go in under general and end up as an SP or working in the Chow Hall. No offense to those who do. He wants to only be a firefighter. The recruiter gave us a song and dance on how hard it is to get that career field. He acted like me asking about only waiting for one job was the most impossible thing he ever heard of.
Not sure what to think.

@a3057825uu

I could really use some good advice. How long ago were you a recruiter?

Julie --- 14 years ago -

Talk to someone else - a friend of my son's left for basic over the summer to be a fire fighter. He was recruited here...

Dawnmom25 --- 14 years ago -

There is only one recruiter here.
My son can put in to be a firefighter and might get it but there's a chance he could get picked up for another of the jobs he has to pick.

Getting FF is hard. Everything the recruiter said is true.
So if he joined as a FF and in training he hurts his back and is disqualified then what?

In the Navy everyone is a Firefighter.

Dawnmom25 --- 14 years ago -

Matt,
Good point. I think he is also interested in Broadcasting.
Do you have experience with FF career field?

Matt --- 14 years ago -

I tried to get in as a FF and that didnt happen. My neighbor at my last base was going through FF tech school and hurt his back so he went medical. Im friends a bunch of FFs and the Fire Chief at my last base(not because they were FFs) My dad was a FF in the AF back in Nam. Thats my FF background.

Dawn, the recruiter can set him up for a screen test long before signing any papers. He should get that ball rolling while he's trying to figure out the FF thing.

Dawnmom25 --- 14 years ago -

He is actually interested in the technical side, like video editing, camera man.

if your son wants to actually fight fires he may need to look into civilian fire fighting, my friends husband has been one a long time active duty and there are never any fires...hope it helps...NEVER is not an exaggeration

a2799473uu --- 14 years ago -

you could probably even call the fire dept yourself and ask if you and he could go there to see what they do...recruiters will NOT know what the ff's actually do day to day

I'm pretty sure you still go in for the screen test-- my son had no interest in being in front of the camera either, but they had him jump through all of the hoops while telling him that Broadcasting didn't have any openings and it's hard to get into (don't know how true that is). They had him do the screen test while he was completing his SERE physicals.
