Tomorrow I want to go to a few places and get a price to get new tyres on my car. Last year we had 3 replaced on my husbands car and it cost 180 pounds in the place in Brandon on London Road. Is this a standard price, does anyone know? I know at least one of my tyres need replacing soon and I will check the others. Thanks :) just some info on places would be nice before I possibly spend more money at one place.

Thank you :)

It totally depends on the tires.Size, Speed Rating, Make,Model, Quality etc.. They range from $25-700 per tire. IF you are shipping your car back you need to make sure they meet DOT standards. And you really shouldnt have mismatched tires. In some US states a car wont pass the safety inspection if they are. You can check Tirerack.com they ship APO and are cheaper than AAFES but then you have to get them mounted. Also Look at the Tire size on the side of the tire(245/60/16 for example) and just call around. No need to waste gas.
OR Check Ebay I have bought upsized aftermarket wheels with new Tires and sold my factory almost needing replacement stock set for the same price. Worked out great for me.

Weeting tire center is good in Brandon. I get them from there any time I need them.

wifey (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Thank you! Weeting tyres is where my husbands car was done so I was thinking of going back there.

Thanks for the info matt, its an English car that we will be selling before we pcs.

I just bought new ones for my car at AAFES. The guys over at the Hobby shop on base put em on for us for 130 bucks.

ORGirl,

The hobby shop on RAFL charged you $130 to mount tires that you bought? That sounds really high. This coming Summer I'm ordering tires for my car and mounting them myself at the hobby shop on RAFL. I can't believe it was that much just to mount tires at the hobby shop....wow. I'm stunned. That's $32.50 per tire.

It is alot of cash when you think about *how* a tire is mounted. The Hunter machines they use are VERY easy to run and practically do the job themselves. The guy just stands there and pushes the on switch. Balancing tires isn't hard at all either.

I hope they at least smiled alot and filled your new tires with Nitrogen....and of course said "Thank You for you business" a bunch of times.

Weeting Tires is the best. They are fast and not that expensive!

One thing to keep in mind is that Tires vs. Tyres is a key point to remember. If you are buying "Tyres" then chances are you are buying them on the economy. Many of these tyres don't have the same DOT certifications needed to be considered legal in the US. I have two non-OEM 17" tyres I got when I bought "summer" wheels for my car from a British guy awhile back. They are all British-Spec tyres and wouldn't pass an inspection in my home state (PA) simply because they don't carry the needed markings on the side. (Except for the two OEM ones still mounted)

I would imagine the same *could* be said for "Tires" being used on a British car. The EU has so many regulations it's hard to say if an American tire would be legal for use on a Euro-Spec car. Of course, this would vary by country. For instance Germany has some very uncool laws regarding cars.

I'm ordering my tires from Tire Rack.com cause I'm looking to buy a set of 17" Sumitomos for my summer tires. I can get a complete set of these great tires for $300 from Tire rack. Good price, and AAFES doesn't carry them. They'd probably try talking me into buying a set of "Nexen" tires (I cannot stand this brand!!!!!!!!!!) for more.

I bought and paid for new tires for my husbands British Spec car at the RAFL Car center in May and passed the MOT with them on.... I didnt realized the US and UK regulations were different, would have been helpful to know that then lol, but they passed so I guess some US tires are ok?

I would imagine that a good many testers (from anywhere in the world) probably would only pay attention to the tread depth and the condition of the tire...not so much the markings on the tires/tyres.

This is just an example, but in California parts have to be certified for use in that state....or else they are illegal. You can look in Summit racing's catalog and see lots of parts that have a "50 State Legal" or "Not legal for sale or use in California" listed somewhere near pretty much any item.

I suppose there may be testers out there that might say the same about tires. A good example is Child Car seats. Here, you MUST have a UK spec car seat in a UK Spec vehicle. The same goes for a US Spec vehicle....you must use a US Spec car seat. My buddy from Germany was here over the holiday and I told him about this...he asked

"What...is the UK car seat safer or something?". In short? No. No more safer than any car seat I have ever seen. Our experience is with "Booster Seats" and from what we can tell....they are basically the same. Just like US Spec motorcycle helmets and UK Spec helmets. They have different ratings/markings.

It's just something to keep in mind. I'd hate to have to spend a bunch of money on tires only to be told they aren't legal for use once we get back in the US. Talk about a hassle!

Heres some info on 'tyres':
http://www.justtyres.com/tyre-laws.php

And as for the 'law' on car seats we had a US high backed booster in hubbys car when he got pulled for speeding (yes he's an idiot!). Policeman commented on lack of car seat/booster for child in the middle (not enough space between car seat & hb booster and I told him that) but nothing about the American seat.

I went to weeting tyres in Brandon and they took no more than 30mins to change it. We have a British spec car. They werent too badly priced.

Julie --- 14 years ago -

We went to Weeting today - fast great service and prices are comparable to Tirerack.com... Plus, they mount, balance and dispose of your old tires for you.

NEX-Girl --- 14 years ago -

We've done Weetin Tires a few time too, and love them! :)

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Beverley, the car seat thing is a base rule *I Think*. I'm not 100% sure. All I know is what WE were told when we PCS'd here 3 years ago.

I'd wager that most Policemen really wouldn't care to be honest...or even know what they were looking at. I could tell you "Graco" is US and "Dreaming Baby" is UK, based on experience.

The Policeman that pulled you over might not have been paying attention to every detail. Either way it's a dumb rule....we had to buy two boosters for ONE child!

It was cheaper then what AAFES quoted us to put them on. They charge more for Low profile tires. And my husband was adamant about sticky weights which made the price slightly higher. Oh it was the hobby shop on RAFM who did them.
And that included getting rid of the old tires for us. So I think all in all it was a good deal. :)

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

ORGirl,

Well you didn't mention tire disposal! Lol! Yeah, I can see the extra price now that you mentioned more details. I'm picky too....gotta have the sticky wheel weights! :)

Matt --- 14 years ago -

You paid $130 to get tires mounted? OMFG
I paid $5 a tire to get mounted and that was a 40 series 18 inch tire and a 37 inch mud tires @ my last base.

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Matt, yeah....that's what I was initially thinking. I can't remember exactly the price but I saw the prices for mounting tires at the RAFL Hobby Shop and I remember not flipping out about it. I *think* it was no more than $10?

ORGirl --- 14 years ago -

Last time we got tires mounted was at Les Schwab. They were 38" Toyo tires for my husband's beast of a lifted pick-up.
At least it wasn't 130 pounds! Then I think I would've had a heart attack! haha.
