We're looking to buy a new/newer car. Any suggestions for an Amer spec car since we plan on taking it back to the US. Any dealers or places recommended? We stopped to look at some at the back gate at RAF Lakenheath, but don't necessarily want a brand new car.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Newer US spec car? Whats newer? 2008ish? How much are u looking to spend??

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

Prob no more than 2-3 yrs old. Price range between $20,000-30,000.

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

Has to be 4 door due to my child. So no sports cars or anything impractical.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Go buy one at AAFES or the VW place. Hell you could get a BMW or Volvo for that price. Im 99% sure USAA (if thats who you have) wont finance a used car overseas.

aimee --- 14 years ago -

Any interest in a nissan xterra?? :)

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

Thanks for info Matt, didn't know that about USAA.

Hmm, not sure we want an SUV Aimee thanks :)

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

Btw, is AAEFES negotiable with price like you'd buy a car in the States? How does that work with no tax?

Matt --- 14 years ago -

AAfes is non negiotable. Might wanna double check on the USAA used car financing overseas.. VOLVO and BMW have the best Military sales programs VW sucks. There is a 2011 Volvo S40 for $26k on volvos site.

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

And the Volvo price is also non negotiable? Thanks for the info, very helpful!

Julie --- 14 years ago -

Almost nothing is negotiable here...

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

lol, good to know

Steph --- 14 years ago -

From what I understand like everyone is saying here, you can not will and deal like you can in the States, unless you go to a British car dealer and get a British spec. But as far as getting at American spec car, you pretty much pay what they offer.

We were looking at getting one, and asked about prices, and we were told the prices were pretty much set due to shipping and what not. So we have desided to wait till get back to the States to get our cars there so we can get good deals.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Just because you cant negotiate it doesnt mean your gettin a bad deal. Volvos and BMWs are priced really good. AAFES ehh OK your not getting ripped off but you are paying an average price for it. Depending on where u live in the US AAFES might be a really good deal

Well, I'm not sure what people mean by negotiable (everything has multiple meanings depending on who's viewpoint you are looking at) but we have 4 years here and have so far bought TWO brand new cars while stationed here in the UK.

We looked into buying more than just these two vehicles though...so we have some experience on what goes on at ENCS. Also, not trying to sound rude but "Matt" I'm wondering where you get your info. You seem to be certain, as if you have the "Reg" book on everything in front of you. I used to own a Mustang GT back at our old base.

When we first got here we looked into buying a brand new (then) 2008 GT. While it wasn't a scenario where we haggled about price it was more like "Well....that is a little steep" then they would see what they could do as far as rebate eligibility, promotions, etc...etc...

You don't actually "haggle" nor do you negotiate but they CAN get prices LOWER than they originally ask. We bought a Ford Ranger from them and was able to get it out the door for $11,800. Later, I had the itch for a GT again, so we looked into getting that SWEET Red 2010 GT (with the Track Pack!) but in the end they couldn't get the price low enough.

We ended up going to see Steve @ BMW Military Sales on the 5 ways and bought a 2010 BMW MINI Cooper S. They take trade ins. It worked out well for us, and the price was "flexible". That's a good term for it! Lets just say that while ENCS/BMW/ETC.... prices aren't negotiable, but they are "Flexible" depending on what is going on when you go to buy. Contact Steve at BMW Military sales or Tom at RAFL's ENCS. Both are really good guys!

Ok, thanks for all the help. Feel better not going into this blindly. I hate car shopping!

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

It's actually quite calm buying from ENCS (which actually isn't affiliated with AAFES at all!) compared to many high pressure car sales places back home.

Just go in, let them know what type of car you are interested in and go from there. Take your time with those guys, they offer ALOT of info at one time! You'd be surprised the type of great deal you can get on a new car from them....especially if your budget is $20,000-$30,000.....you'll have NO problem finding a great car for MUCH less than your budget! Plus, the cars they sell are Ziebart protected on the undercarriage, something many dealers back home don't offer.

StayingAnonymous --- 14 years ago -

Are they able to get me any car I want or do they have certain manufacturers they sell?

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

As far as I know they offer: Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Lincoln, and Harley Davidson (I know you don't want a bike....I'm just trying to be as accurate as possible). Here is a link to their website. They can custom order a vehicle with many options dealers don't offer. This is because the manufacturer offers more flexibility for Military.

BMW Military Sales of course, offers BMW and MINI. Too bad you weren't looking for an older SUV....my wife & I have a 2000 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer that was a Southern Truck from new that we no longer want. It is currently in dry storage back in the states. We have it professionally maintained and inspected by my Cousin. It's a great truck. Fully loaded and third row LEATHER seating, 4x4...the WORKS. We opted not to bring it due to parking and the roads being small in places.

But, since we got here we really don't go to many places that the Expy wouldn't fit! Lol! We miss it but as the Brits say..."It's surplus to our requirements". :)

Anyhow, hook up with the people at ENCS and at least see what they can offer you, you're not locked into anything so it never hurts to look! Those four door Wranglers are very nice! Good for the family, great for the summer, great for the winter and room to haul stuff. Good luck! ;)

ENCS and the VW place outside Lakenheath are owned by the same company. ENCS also has Honda.I have NEVER seen a Lincoln at any ENCS lot. I personally wouldnt even consider Lincoln Ford forgot about them these last couple years. I was going by my expierence with ENCS when I bought my Jeep they wouldnt negotiate on the price and their "Price guarantee" is a joke. Are you really going to shop your car in the states 30 days after you buy one in England? A dealership will not give out a pricing sheet that ENS needs. I used tosell cars and a salesman did it because the customer wanted it for the Credit Union. The salesman let the manager know as they were driving off and he got fired right there on the spot. The plac eoff of Lakenheath sells VW Audi Toyota

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Matt, you know how sometimes ENCS parks cars by the BXtra? Yeah, I have seen Lincolns parked there....the last one I saw there was the Truck type thing Lincoln makes. We have been here for 3 years and I don't have a job.....pretty much 24/7 to be observant to all things related to the bases. I see alot while AD are at work, and I still see alot when they are not. I've always been told that I have the "Gift of Gab" and "Man, you should sell cars!". I've been married for 6 years now and we have pretty much purchased more cars than we needed to! Lol! At one time we owned 3 cars....and it's just two of us and a 5 year old (well, actually 2 at the time). I think we have bought around 11 cars in the last 6 years.

I'd think we have some experience compared to the people that only buy cars when the old one dies.

Of ALL the car lots we have been to between Pennsylvania and Georgia ENCS has been by far the friendliest to deal with, no pressure environment, and actually worked HARD to get us the lowest price possible. I challenge ANY CONUS dealer to sell a customer a brand new Ford Ranger XL with the same options ours had for a better price. We got ours for $11,800....and if I remember correctly around $1000 of that is getting it shipped here and the light conversion. The only deal I've seen that was better was where the guy gives a new AK-47 with every Ford truck purchased. I'd bite on that deal!

I've literally NEVER seen a Honda on the RAFM/RAFL ENCS lots.....maybe in Germany? But not here. It's not even a brand they mention on their site!

I'm not saying they are the best on the planet. That is completely opinionated, and would most likely turn into a P*&#@% match about who can offer a better deal, who knows more etc...etc...completely unnecessary.

The OP simply asked about options. I, based on lots of time spent at ENCS, would say wholeheartedly that I CAN recommend them to others. If people choose to shop elsewhere then that's fine! It's not my choice or money. All I know is when we finally PCS outta here we'll have a VERY low mileage (England is Teeny, tiny) 2010 MINI Cooper S waiting for us at our next duty station. The best part is it will have had 2 and a half years of payments already knocked out. They hold their value well too!

All the people that waited to buy a new ride back in the states will have a new payment to take on, and will have *likely* paid more than if they had simply just custom ordered from ENCS (or bought directly from the lot). Simples. :)

Matt --- 14 years ago -

They have/had a white Honda Odyssey @ mildenhall. They do not advertise Honda for some reason and they are also only available to USAFE not PACAF and it has to be a US built Honda.
I wouldnt consider ENCS a "dealership" more of a car buying service.
I sold cars for 2 years and dont recommend it to anyone. It sucks. Alot of hours waiting for someone to walk in the door. Seems awesome until the end of the month and you only sold 8 cars to 10 people who you talked to and your 1 car sale away from being unemployed and your next up has a 400 credit score with no money down. My jeep got totaled 7 months after I bought it and when I went to ENCS and they wanted $1,500 more for the same year/model/options before shipping that I bought off a dealer even though they were selling it as a leftover. The "extended warranty" they wanted $1600 for which you might need depending on where you are stationed only cost them $800. They are there to make money just like everyone else. I'm not saying ENCS is a rip off by far it is not. But it is connected to AAFES.
But compared to Volvo(which isnt a luxury car anymore per there new CEO and is also owned by Geely)it isnt all that. Volvo gives you an outstanding warranty and they will ship your car back for you so you can ship 2 vehicles.

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Our extended warranty only cost $995. We traded that vehicle on for our MINI...we are getting the unused warranty back.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

So if ENCS is such a good deal why didnt you use them this time?

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Cause, the Mustang I wanted was more than USAA would finance for us...and the monthly payments were a little too much. (They did try all they could to get a better price, Rob was awesome!)

I previously owned two classic Minis and simply love the old minis and the new MINIs. I've always loved the Sweetness of the Cooper S MINI so, we went and looked. Voila! We bought one! We love it, little monsters!

I'll get another New Edge SN95 Mustang GT when we PCS....then I'll forge it and SC it with the Tork Tech kit (among a HUGE list of other mods). Should be running around 500 RWHP. Savvy?
