I am in a bind and I was wondering if this is crazy? I bought a beautiful car in great condition 1 month ago and a pretty big part needs replaced.Any ideas?

af_wife7 --- 14 years ago -

Where did you buy it from? If you have no warranty or you bought it from another party you'll have to replace it yourself. I personally wouldn't buy the car. I would either make the dealer or person repair it first and then I would buy the car, possibly even for more asking price. My suggestion with buying used cars is to always take it to a mechanic and have them look at it bumper to bumper and see what if anything needs repaired before you make your decision. This personally has saved me before.

My answer to your question....

Yes, but it would depend on what kind of car it is and what the part is. If it is a car worth putting money into then I'd buy it in a heartbeat. If it was one of the many "disposable cars" then nope....I'd pass.

What type of bind specifically are you in? What kind of car is it?

Matt --- 14 years ago -

We need more info on the car..
year miles make model problem.
I sold my Jeep needing repairs but i knocked off what a dealer quoted to fix it..
Guess what? That didnt fix it. Guy called me back wanting me to pay for the next round of repairs ($700) and i told him he was SOL.

ShizzleShizzleDizzleDizzle (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Elizabeth, just as I said before (and as Matt has said again) we need more info on the car. Best case scenario the part is available locally for cheap....or you could always find a good deal on eBay.

Matt, hell yeah! I totally would have told the guy the same thing. It sounds like the deal was done. Some people....I don't get how people seem to think individual sellers should bend over backwards or act like a major retailer. It's unrealistic! Just out of curiosity....what type of Jeep was it? I always wanted a nice CJ7/Scrambler/Wrangler.....love them.

It was an 05 Unlimited lifted locked on 37s built for offroading. Won many Mud Drags and that was the reason for the problems.sold it for $10k I had almost that in the axles and wheelsalone .

Really need to know specifics like above.

I bought my car a few years back privately and after a week it dropped a valve! luckily my brother was in the car at the time as I have no recovery cover so he called the AA using his card and all the AA man could diagnose was it was a serious engine problem so he towed the 15 miles home.
I NEVER contacted the seller as it was a private transaction, after spending a small fortune on a replacement engine I've writen it up as an expensive lesson learned.

I bought a Citroen C5 with leather, in dash GPS, the works. It's a 2001 with 78k on it. It needs the timing belt (cambelt) replaced. I paid 950 for it and it will nee about 400 pounds of work/parts. Otherwise it is a lovely car with all the upgrades.

I personally think it is worth the money I would put into it, and that would be all fine and dandy if I had the money to do so.

I have terrible luck with cars. I did contact the seller as it was a "dealer" but there was no warranty, so I do not expect to get any sympathy from them.

So if anyone knows someone that can fit a Citroen cambelt (apparently the one of the most complicated fits - 6-7.5 hrs of work) let me know!

Did the "cambelt" break or does it need replacing ? If it broke you might need a new engine. How do you know it needs replacing?

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Most cambelts are changed at 60k

lizglowark --- 14 years ago -

It apparently needs changed. My car is supposed to need changed at 100k according to citroen and 80k according to everyone else. It hasn't broken yet, but I don't want that to happen.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

If Citroen says 100k change it at 100k
How much longer are you here for?

lizglowark --- 14 years ago -

2 years and a few months. I can hear it really loudly though, and taking the stuff off to look at it is going to take 4 hours of labor, so if they do that there's no reason for me not to get it put on. The general feeling I am getting is that they really do last to 80k and my car is nearly there. I just bought it and I don't want the engine to be damaged

Matt --- 14 years ago -

You can hear the belt? What does it sound like?
Who is telling you they last 80k? The people who are going to make $$ fixing it?
I wouldnt touch it and then sell it for what you paid for it when you leave letting the buyer know it needs done.

lizglowark --- 14 years ago -

Yeah.. We need this car in order to sell a car we owe $$$ money on. So, I pay 500 dollars to fix this car, and it enables me to sell a car that costs 500 each month.

I called several mechanics and also asked a few friends and posted on citroen forums. It sounds really bad almost like a diesel engine. I'm not that swift with vehicles, so I thought I'd change the oil. They haven't opened it up yet to confirm, but I think I will get it repaired after all. Crazy situation. Thanks for all the input

Voice of Reason --- 14 years ago -

If your engine sounds like a diesel then it may be more work than 'just' the cambelt.

Has it been making the noise ever since you bought it or since you changed the oil? it could be the wrong grade oil in it making it noisy.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

Or injectors

Roderick --- 14 years ago -

If its making noise like a diesel engine, and the suspicion is that the cam belt needs replacing, its probably already broken and began the damage on the engine. From my limited experience, if you catch it before it breaks, you will never know the difference. There will be no change in the driving of the vehicle or the noise it produces. It almost makes you wonder "did they really change it". If its sounding off, you're probably already in trouble.

lizglowark --- 14 years ago -

I was told that the car wouldn't even start if the belt was broken?

The place I bought it from is looking at it for me today. Wish me luck!

Matt --- 14 years ago -

If the belt is broken it wont run
