yes there is a place in Mildenhall on the industrial estate called Car & Commercial Windscreens - they did a great job on my car and really cheap - number is 01638-515733 - on James Carter Road

Low Cost Car Rentals can replace winshields. They are super cheep and did a great job on both of my friends vehicles. They are located in Mildenhall, but I don't have their number

Did you insure the car? USAA will do crack repair, they refer you to someone.

I have liabiliy with USAA, so will call them in the morning. (thanks, I didn't even think about that.) i don't know if they will cover it with just liablity but worth a call. will check out everyone's recommendations also. i wish someone would come on base and repair it, i am afraid of getting ticket for windshield now.

"i wish someone would come on base and repair it, i am afraid of getting ticket for windshield now."

If you get pulled over about it (highly unlikely) than tell them you're on the way to the garage to get it repaired :]

Whenever I think crack or chip in the windshield I sing the Autoglass repair commercial in my head:

"Auto-glass repair....auto glass replace!"

I went to their web site though and it seems to me that if your insurance does not cover them they can get pretty pricey. It starts at like 72 quid. Does anyone know the average you would pay to repair a chip in your windscreen?

How big is this "crack" Sounds like a windshield replacement. USAA doesnt cover windshields in the UK. I had my new car for 3 days and the windshield shattered. I called USAA and I had to pay the deductible. I told them I didnt have to last time and they said it changed when you moved to the UK. I said you didnt tell me that . They replied WELL DO YOU EXPECT US TO TELL YOU ALL THE CHANGES TO YOUR POLICY WHEN YOU MOVED?? I said F#)K YEAH I DO!! I drove around for 6 months with the windshield shattered only once did I get questioned at the gate and I told them its on order.

Chip repairs are usually around the £30 mark (free with some insurance policies) but the size of the chip may mean a new screen. I'm sure one company quoted they could repair a chip up to the size of a 5p but another would only repair upto 10mm.
Like the commercials state though a chip can so easily become a crack just by driving your car, we had a chip appear when coming back from Hastings and watched it grow into a 2ft crack as we drove home!

My crack is really big now. :) It needs total replacement. I got several estimates and they all varied widely. I am going to wait on repair as I am fighitng the seller as we had a verbal contract for all repairs within thirty days. I do Not expect them to repair windshield, but all the other crap that is wrong in the thirty days, i sure do. I filed an MOT appeal today. I don't know if i want the car now after my run in with this car dealership yesterday. Some car dealers just not honest. It' disheartening. But that is a whole other thread. Let's stick to crack.

make sure your deductible is worth using USAA, ours was too high so we had to pay out of pocket. I called Glassworks and they repaired both cracks in our cars for 30 pounds. I had to replace the windshield in my US car a month later do to a speeding lorry dropping rocks, and it cost 145 pounds, Auto Glass Repair wanted that plus 200 extra pounds to ship in a US windshield when a british one fit perfectly.

Matt --- 14 years ago -

A british one will fit but good luck getting that back into the states. If it doesnt have a DOT stamp on it you might have to replace it when you get back with a DOT one. I waited for a US Spec one when i got mine replaced.

Well we aren't taking my car back to the states, so no problem there :-)
