So Ive asked this on many forums lets see what responses I get here... The Air Force wants its members to be more in shape. So why is there nothing but fast food on the bases? Why isnt there any real healthy options. Not just for the members but theres alot of spouses on these bases that could stand avoiding fast food. Why not a salad bar like Ruby Tuesdays had. Why does everything have to be fried, fatty, soaked in grease? And Subway, not even going there. Any thoughts?

There are other options they are just rarely open which bugs me like the golf course which has a very nice chef salad, the liberty club has food on certain days of the week, the G-Club has a really nice salad bar during lunch hours every week day for not very much money and then they have evening service as well. But yes I can agree that we need more healthy options on base.

Its coming in the next year supposedly.

Amy --- 15 years ago -

I have been hearing that for he past 7 years and nothing. I will believe it when I see it. I hope they finally do though it would be nice to have a few more options.

It will be an Open chow hall for everyone with alot more choices . Why they dont have the Chow hall open to everyone I dunno its not like the food is cheap there.

I to think we need some better options on base! As a recovering fast food junkie...lol...I have been finding myself completely disgusted at the amount of food that is eaten by not only myself when I was crazy for it, but also by all the other people on base. It is truly not helping in bringing down the percentages of the overweight/obese! I am amazed by the lines of people that wait for Charlie's everyday, and forget about the smell that just seeps from the building! The options that are available, as Amy mentioned are good, but it still isn't enough. I know that there is no way for me to run on my lunch break all the way out to the golf course to pick up a salad, or wait in line at the Commissary for a wrap...we only get 30 minutes where we work! I think a nice little cafe would be great where you could get a salad, a panini, or sandwich, either quickly to take away or you could eat in. I know there is Rugby's on Lakenheath, but all the times I have ate there, it seems like it's taken forever to get a sandwich and side, and there has always been something mixed up or missing on my order. But I do love them for an occassional Cafe Mocha in the mornings :) In the end, we most definitely are in need of some new, better and healthier choices!

This has always been my complaint about the commissary as well. They do really well at keeping prices low on cookies and soda, but when you want brown rice you have to get the tiny bag. A person *can* make healthy choices even at fast food - Burger King does salad better than the golf club, and the grilled chicken sandwich is very filling (just leave off the mayo). Pizza Hut personal pizzas are less than 500 calories - you don't have to buy soda, too. I can't think of anything healthy at Popeyes... I really believe that if people consistently choose the healthier items, good business sense will kick in and more will be offered. But if we keep ordering the fat stuff because it tastes good, that's what they are going to sell. I don't want to be forced to eat what some government official decides is good for me.

I would love a little Restaurant that we could sit down and eat at that is healthy. Like a natures table or something of that sort. I also agree with Shari, We try to buy healthier foods and end up spending tons more on our grocery bill. You can get family size things of junk food without any issues but the healthy things always come in smaller containers.

A restaurant would be great, there are also lots off places off base to eat healthy as well.

I find myself grabbing fast food way too often for convinience (between work, sports, family, errands, etc)... of course, this is often when on base so going off base doesn't make much more sense then just going home. It would be great even if BK was able to offer the apple fries or other sides like they do in the states. My oldest would have maybe a few of our fries when he was younger, but mainly yogart (Wendy's) or apples (McDonalds or BK) etc if we ate out. Fries were a special treat.

Personally, I don't like the BK salads (although I've talked with others who agree). I don't care for HUGE carrots etc on my salads, I want to able to stick everything with a fork and eat it... not finger foods. I try to eat the regular chicken sandwich but sometimes get something different just for a little variety, and try not to eat all the fries.

I honestly believe that a healthy food store would be barren most days even if they did have it. Healthier food is more expensive and you throw that into a fast food type place... its just gonna get more expensive. People will try it out, complain about the prices and then stick to BK to start with. It would be awesome as an option but, like I said, I think MOST would just stick with BK. Especially the moms with kids which also makes up for most of the overweight people on base.

Masterchef, I agree! We started eating according to the south beach diet, and at first it was so spendy! But I started buying all of my produce off base on market days, and that has saved me so much money! If you want to eat healthier you have to do your homework to save. It shouldn't be that way, but whatevs.

Hey! I like Subway!!!

Jaymi --- 15 years ago -

Bag lunch + ridiculously oversized lunchbox + giant icepacks = problem solved. = P

I know this doesn't work for everyone but if my husband's lunch will keep for 14 hours on the flightline, it'll probably keep pretty much anywhere else.
