So here is the story. I had just finsished my shopping at the commissary and was ready to check out so I went to the express checkout lane. The clerk asked if I had 15 items or less. (Its not like I count my items as I put them into my cart) I said "roughly, they are all small things." And they were! Like, toothpaste, tea, lasagna noodles, cottage cheese...ect...you get the idea. She said "well I would have to get another bagger if you have more." And turned me away!!! But thats not what PMO!!! She then proceeded to unlatch the baracade and pulled the next lady standing in the regular line over into the express checkout!! SHE HAD MORE GROCERIES THAN ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I'm not just saying that for the sake of a good story or to make myself look like the victim. Just facts. Anyways, at this point in time my blood was just BOILING!!!!!!!! So I proceeded over to the self check out with my fussy baby and 22 items. (which we all know self checkout is a real pain in the @ss, because it never weighs the item properly when you "place" it in the bag) I asked the self checkout clerk where I could make a complaint. And she got me the store manager. I told him what had happened, and how I thought it was totally rude, discourtious, and un-customer service like. I did see him have a chat with her while I was STILL checking out. I hope she learned her lesson. I mean really. I don't understand what she was thinking! After being in high end jewelry sales as a manager myself, I know what customer service is and what being rude is. With this being said, I hope that ya'll complain if things aren't the way they should be! Coming from a sales/customer service/ managerial stand point; sometimes you don't even know that things like this are happening unless customers bring them to your attention. So I am encouraging you all to stand your ground and when you know something isn't right to tell higher ups about it so the problem can be corrected!! And PS...count your groceries!!

There wasn't a sign on the express checkout just FYI. Self checkout has a sign for 20 or less. And how is it that she turned me away from the express line then proceeded to take someone with even MORE groceries from the other line? Tell me how that is great customer service? I can understand the situation about the commissary not having things in stock. People should really know that the cashiers have nothing to do with that. I'm just saying the "smart" couritous thing for her to have done was just to take me. Its not like I intentionally thought I would go straight to the express line...I just looked at my cart and knew I didn't have much in there, and that I wouldn't need help out. It would've saved us both time AND trouble. I think she was just really wanting to have some "authority" today. Either way I'm sticking to my guns to say what she did WAS wrong! I would've been fine if she had turned me away and not pulled someone with MORE groceries into her lane.

Express lane was 15 items or less. You had more. Sometimes the express lane will take the NEXT person in the regular line. B/c you had more than 15 items you were not the next person in line, you were actually the last person in line (if you had gone to the regular line). It doesn't matter how large or small the items are, they still need to be scanned individually and you had 7 over the express limit. Since the cashier decided to take someone w/ over the 15 item limit, logically that person would be the next person in line. I am sorry you were inconvenienced w/ your baby - grocery shopping w/ little ones is NOT fun, especially when they are tired and grumpy.

humm.... well, my story that happened about a month ago at the Mildenhall one.... I went to buy pears and raspberries for a dessert I was making. There is no one else in the store except me. I go to the express check out and weigh my pears, look up "Pears" in the system and out pops up 6 different pictures of pears with the title "PEAR". So I looked at my pears and looked at the pictures and pressed the one that looked just like my pears. It rang up $121! I turned around and said "umm, I think I pressed the wrong button. It says these pears cost $99 per pound?" So the lady comes over very noticeably irritated at me and says "you pressed the wrong one" then swipes her card to clear it then walks away leaving "her" screen open. So I had to turn around again and say, "umm, your screen is still open. How do I close it?" So she sighs and walks over to swipe her card again and close out her screen. Then I start out to find my pears again as the lady walks about 5 paces behind me and talks to the only other cashier there and says "Why do we have those pears in there anyway? Can we take it out of the system?" the other cashier said, "Well, incase we bring them in special." TO WHICH the crabby checkout/bag lady replied, "Well, we need to take it out because people like THAT PERSON dont know how to read and just press any ol' button and screw it up." - I was so offended I almost started to cry. I have a college education, thank you very much! Reading is one of the requirements. She was right behind me and said it, I know, purposely so I could hear. My heart was racing and I just wanted to get the heck out of there because I am not a confrontational person. I was so upset and embarrassed that I literally almost threw up while I was checking out my crappy pears. (AND I was in a great mood prior to this so there was no way this lady could have thought I was being crabby or rude to her. I even told her, apolitically, that I pressed the wrong button. I was the only person in the store, so it wasnt like they were overly busy either.)

Shannon that SUCKS! That is why I hate the self checkout, there are SO many things that can go wrong! And then even though you (and myself) are educated smart people make mistakes someone else takes a jab at you for it. Dude. I totally see where you are coming from. And if she had said that I should get in line or I need to take someone who has been waiting who was over their limit I would've been more understanding. But honestly if you just guesstimate what you have in your cart 7 over really isn't a too far off guess in my opinion. I mean who really counts how much they have in their cart?? And I honestly thought my minimalist cart qualified for that lane, hence why I went to it. I wasn't expecting a rude confrontation about how many groceries were in my cart, and some remark about getting an extra bagger. I'm a solution type of person. Simply put, if she would've said I have to take someone from the regular line who had been waiting longer I would've totally been at peace with her actions. But words and actions can mean a lot and used correctly can solve problems! Thats why I thought it was necessary that she be talked to by a manager, because she didn't go about it properly. Doing this, I hope that she goes about it better next time. PS. I was in a good mood too. But I'm sorry if I expect employees to do their job and treat people with a little respect. I still left in a somewhat good mood too! Probably more relieved that I had finally got through the damn self checkout!! ;)

You had more than 15 and were techincally last in line

Just ME --- 15 years ago -

Geez people! I didn't know how "technical" everyone was going to get! I thought I had 15 or less items! Sorry I didn't take the time to count them before heading into the express lane! I get that since I was over I was "techinically" at the end of the line. But she didn't say that now did she? No. But made a remark that had really nothing to do with turning me away, and THEN taking someone with MORE. If that was the case then the remark she had made was totally hipocritical to her actions! Better to have told me she needs to take the next person who has over the limit amount of groceries, than to have made the other comment about getting an additional bagger and THEN to proceed onto another customer. It didn't make sense, and was totally rude and hipocritical.

Jean --- 15 years ago -

I completely see where you are coming from. I also used to be in retail management, and agree about the terrible customer service. I worked for a store that the cashiers could not turn customers away even if their light was off unless there was somewhere else to direct them. As we say in America, "the customer is always right!" So although you may have had more items, if there was no one else in that line, it shouldn't really have been an issue.

Just saying it was gone about poorly. People need to work on tactical thinking, common sense and logistics. I mean, honestly, how hard can it really be?

Matt --- 15 years ago -

How hard can it really be to count to 15?

Just ME --- 15 years ago -

Seriously...who counts their frickin' groceries!!??

Jenn --- 15 years ago -

I count my groceries! If I am gonna go in the express lanes I always count to make sure i am within the limits! To be courteous of the others that may possibly get in line behind me. otherwise it would defeat the whole purpose of the express line!

WitnessProtectionProgram --- 15 years ago -

I don't. I just give it a look and call it good. But then again, I've never had a problem of getting into the express lane.

Jenn --- 15 years ago -

I NEVER count my groceries... I estimate as well. I think that the issue was the customer service, not the number of groceries she had. We all know that there is always a nice way to handle situations and she felt the cashier was rude. I have often found the customer service to be lacking, not just at the commissary but pretty much every where on base.... way to stand up!

Just ME --- 15 years ago -

Yes!!! THANK YOU Jenn!! You hit the nail on the head.

Julie --- 15 years ago -

2 Jenns? One counts the other doesn't, huh? I count my groceries, but then I use the self check out as much as possible. That's beside the point - I agree - it's about the attitude. I was in there last night and I was waiting behind a family with children, Lord knows I know how it is when I bring the family along and I had no problems waiting, however the clerk who checks id's for that section actually had the nerve to mouth off to her co-worker about how slow they were because her kids were trying to help. The clerk looked like she was still in high school. I don't think the lady heard her, thankfully - cause that was not only rude, but totally out of line.
