Hi, we have a 2004 1.8t vw passat and twice last year we had to have it towed to a vw main dealers in bury because the coil packs broke. anyhow, it now turns out that there was a recall for the coil packs and the $800 we had to pay for the repair and towing the british (Northgate volkswagon) company will not refund because the car is an import and they say we need to contact vw america. anyone had something similar?

Jess --- 15 years ago -

Sorry to hear that, our only experience with the dealer ships here has been HORRIBLE!! EMG Mazda in Cambridge is horrible and a complete waste of time/rip off... good luck with getting your money though.

Roy --- 15 years ago -

Im going to complain to vw usa and vw germany and then some!

Jess --- 15 years ago -

Good! We had our Mazda at the dealers for 3 weeks, $600 in towing, only to find out it was a dead battery, but they couldn't figure it out and then they charged us for labor, 40 pounds and then for recharging the battery, 90 pounds. AND after all was said and done a week later the battery died and we ended up paying 75 pounds to put a new one in our selves...pain in the butt!!

Roy --- 15 years ago -

Are they for real???? thats nearly a $1000 altogether, for a flat battery! They would get a piece of my mind and it would be the rude piece

Jess --- 15 years ago -

LOL they did get a rude piece. I called and harassed them 4-5 times a day. I told them they were paying for a rental, and I would slam their business and I have been telling everyone since then NOT to go there. USAA repaid us for some of the towing fees so that helped... but it made for one hell of a crappy month for us.

Jess --- 15 years ago -

OH and by the way, the cheapest towing after scouting around was actually from the base!!!! They towed our car there; from Thetford to Cambridge, and charged us for it, BUT also charged us for the driver having to drive BACK to the base even though they dropped our car off in Cambridge!! so basically we were charged double!!

Roy --- 15 years ago -

yep we used the base towing too, at least they are cheaper than local. the amount of money the base provides for local business you would think they would give better service. if the base were to close they would go broke! local business take note: its not a free ride!

Jess --- 15 years ago -

lol no kidding.... I still think the base could have been a little cheaper or not charged us for the drivers ride back home....but oh well the car works after we fixed it ourselves lol. I really do hope you get your money back though, especially if it is a recall, all dealers of that vehicle should honor it, no matter what country you bought it in, the make of a car is the make of it, no way to change that.

We have a mazda with warranty and full coverage insurance..and the warranty company told us that our warranty does not work outside the US if we wanted something replaced on the car that the warranty covers we would have to pay to ship it back to the states to have them fix it and pay to have it shipped back....i dont know to me that's f*ing dumb

Jess --- 15 years ago -

yeah I had just bought a new Ford about 4 months before we moved here, I mean it had like .5 miles on it lol but when we took it out of country they denied the warranty on it too...EVEN though Ford is really big here too...

honey --- 15 years ago -

they told us the parts on the vehicles here and there are different..we asked so you can not ship the part the dealer would need here and they said they can not..our warranty is not honored here..lame

honey --- 15 years ago -

the reason they said they could not ship the part here is because the mechanics are not certified for those parts

Jess --- 15 years ago -

yeah Ford Focus US spec are different from the UK spec, my husband rear-ended someone and they want $1400 to fix the bumper and light... if we bought the stuff ourselves it would be about $500 including shipping, so most of the charge was labor... complete rip-off

Roy --- 15 years ago -

That sucks! Im going to moan at vw

honey --- 15 years ago -

so my husband ended up buying the parts and doing it himself even tho it was under warranty. it cost us close to $400 not near as much as what things have costed you 2..but it is still the fact. I am always like we are damned if we do and damned if we dont have the warranty on stuff..something always comes in the way..

honey --- 15 years ago -

all you can do is try..you never know what they will say..let us know how it goes.

honey --- 15 years ago -

oh i forgot to say GOOD LUCK

Matt --- 15 years ago -

A car purchased in the states is owned by a different company than in Europe. The PARENT company is the same but there is VW of America, Honda of America etc.. You will lose your warranty if you bring it over here. I am buying a car through military car sales and am losing my US warranty buying it brand new but will have the UK warranty which is less. This really should be briefed to everyone early but it isnt and your not the only ones getting screwed over. I didnt bring my Lexus here because I would lose the warranty and everytime I have brought my Lexus in for warranty work it was a couple thousand dollars to fix. You might have some luck with VWOA due to it being a recall issue.. If you got stationed in Guam there isnt even a VW dealership to take it to..
